Planes, Trains, and Automobiles - the H2 edition

November 5, 2018 by Rebecca Johnston

While we're in the retail hydrogen fueling station business, we love hearing about other really cool stuff going on with hydrogen and fuel cells across many different applications. Here are some of the things capturing our interest and imaginations lately.

PLANES. Believe it or not, Kanye West proposed this very idea to POTUS in a recent White House visit. Turns out companies have been working on this application for a while. This is a great short video from the folks at cH2ange.

TRAINS. In September, Alstom (one of Europe’s largest railway manufacturers), put two Coradia iLint hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered trains into service in Lower Saxony in Germany.

AUTOMOBILES. We’re hoping Hyundai’s NEXO is coming to Canada soon. It’s a really sexy car, which you can see for yourselves in this review from the guys at Throttle House in Ontario. Eight-minutes long, but lots of fun and you’ll get a good sense of what it’s like to drive an FCEV.

AND THERE'S MORE...

Heavy-duty vehicles. This Toyota Project Portal video is from a year ago but not much beats a drag race between a hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered truck and a diesel big rig so we’re sharing it. Toyota unveiled its latest heavy-duty fuel cell truck prototype in July.

Boats. In the market for a really fancy boat? Viareggio Superyachts, working with Siemens and the Lloyd’s Register, just presented a 65-meter superyacht concept, featuring hydrogen fuel technology. For those of us more used to taking public transit, there’s a fuel cell ferry coming to the Bay Area.

Datacenters. Not everything has wheels. In this video about Microsoft and Stark's Fuel Cell Datacenter project, Sean James, Director of Energy Research describes how his team gets “really excited when we see 1 – 2 % improvement in efficiency”, going on to describe how the fuel cell solution almost doubled it! That's pretty impressive.

Pizza. What does hydrogen have to do with pizza you ask? Pizza Hut’s Tundra PIE PRO is a pizza-making machine with a Toyota fuel cell under the hood. Now I'm just hungry.
