About Hydrogen Stations and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles

Find an H2 station in BC

HTEC is building networks of hydrogen (H2) fueling stations in British Columbia to support the initial rollout of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). Three stations in the Lower Mainland are already open. A fourth station is under construction in Saanich on Vancouver Island, and HTEC is beginning the permitting process for a station in Kelowna which will open in 2021.

  • Are hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) safe?
FCEVs are as safe as any other vehicle on the road and have millions of miles of safe, on-road experience. More than 8,000 Californians own or lease FCEVs and refuel safely every day at one of more than 40 hydrogen stations in operation across the state.
  • Are battery electric vehicles better than FCEVs?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to help society in its transition to a low-carbon energy future. FCEVs will be part of a portfolio of transportation choices for consumers that include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), other low carbon fuels, and public transit. For consumers looking for long-distance range and rapid refueling at central service stations, hydrogen electric vehicles are the answer.
  • Where can I buy a FCEV?
The Toyota Mirai is available at select Toyota dealers in BC's Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. Find an authorized dealer and learn more about the Mirai here. Contact Hyundai here to inquire about their next-generation fuel cell SUV, the Nexo.
  • Will I be able to fuel my FCEV at home?
Although a few groups are working on this, we see it as an unlikely scenario. We believe most of the market is attuned to filling at a service station.
  • Doesn't making hydrogen cause pollution and use a lot of energy?
From well to wheels, hydrogen in an FCEV is more energy efficient and cleaner than a combustion vehicle, including a hybrid. If renewable energy is used to make the hydrogen, carbon emissions can be reduced up to 90%. FCEVs are zero-emission at the tailpipe and reduce carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and the organic compounds that contribute to smog.
  • How many H2 stations are open in BC today?
Today, three stations are open in HTEC’s BC network. HTEC opened the stations in Vancouver and Burnaby in partnership with Shell, and the station in North Vancouver is in partnership with 7-Eleven Canada.
  • Where does the H2 come from for BC's station network?
Today, HTEC purchases hydrogen made from electrolysis by BC Hydro’s Powertech Labs and hydrogen made by industrial gas companies using steam methane reformation of natural gas. HTEC is building a centralised hydrogen production facility to make hydrogen from electrolysis and low carbon intensity hydroelectricity. This facility will have the capacity to provide hydrogen for up to 1,000 light-duty FCEVs.
  • How safe are H2 stations?
Filling up at a hydrogen station is safe, fast, easy, and convenient -- as simple as fueling up a car with gasoline. Hydrogen fueling stations are designed to global standards and are in operation in communities around the world, supporting thousands of fuel cell electric vehicle drivers.
  • How long does it take to build a H2 station?
It takes approximately two years, from concept to commissioning, to open a new hydrogen station.
